The search for solutions to COVID-19 and other potentially deadly viruses has pushed the boundaries of science and innovation. At the same time, the cunning nature of the deadly pandemic is proving to be one of the biggest challenges that humanity has faced.
In such an environment, a novel platform based on multidisciplinary scientific principles has been created that is capable of detecting, preventing, and treating viruses in the human mouth and nose, on the skin and other surfaces, and in the air. The devices developed from the platform comprise proprietary electronic circuitry and are configured with a wireless transceiver, such as Bluetooth, to connect with a smart phone, a doctor’s office, or the Internet of Things (IoT). This is the first approach that offers a unique opportunity to construct global connectivity to trace COVID-19 virus spread and provide personal protection, as well as collective protection, especially for large gatherings or workplaces. Participants of an event or employees of a company who are wearing the device and allowing data to be transmitted to the IoT, it would be possible to manage and ensure a safe event or workplace.
Additional, patent-pending devices include ex-situ, rapid detection (a less than 30-second test) from a “swab” or saliva inserted in small cell, a skin patch for virus detection and deactivation, for example on hands, and devices for insertion in wearable devices such as watches, dental appliances, various surfaces (e.g., a steering wheel, or airplane armrest), and in the air. It is now possible to undertake the development of a range of devices for the detection and elimination of viruses on skin, a variety of surfaces, electronic devices (e.g., watches), and in the air. Each of these devices can be connected wirelessly to a smart phone or further to the Internet of Things.
With constantly changing predictions about vaccines, their timeline and effectiveness, as well as concerns about side effects, the described platform of devices for detection, prevention, and treatment is uniquely positioned to become a solution for the COVID-19 pandemic that can be implemented in a short time (<3 months, including investigative FDA approval) on a massive. Furthermore, the platform can be adjusted to different viruses and pathogens allowing for a ready-as-needed solution for future pandemics
-
Is this device safe and are there any side effects? This device is absolutely safe and imperceptible for the user (except for the feeling of having a mouthguard over one’s teeth). There are also no side effects.
-
How will people use the device? The device for COVID treatment is in the shape of athletic mouthguard or dental appliance and it is placed over one’s teeth, both upper and lower or single (there are several configurations). Depending on the configuration an unrestricted opening of the mouth and speech might be possible, or some slight limitation to clear speech could occur with full version of the device.
-
How is the device controlled or activated? The device will be controlled through a smartphone application, switched on and off, or adjusted by the user. The real-time results of the detection of viruses or the progress on treatment will be available and could be (if allowed by the user) sent to a doctor, medical institution, or shared over Internet of Things.
-
Is this device detecting, preventing, or treating viruses?"This is a device that can detect, prevent and treat viruses such as COVID-19. The treatment is possible in the early stages of infection before major organs are infected (usually 1 – 5 days).
-
How long would a person wear this device for virus detection? It can be used for a short time - just a few minutes - and the concentration of viruses can be determined.
-
How long would a person wear this device for virus prevention?A person wears this as protection (instead of or together with a mask) for a number of hours, ideally when in close proximity to others in public places. Most of viruses inhaled will end up in the mucus of the mouth and the device destroys them.
-
How long would a person wear this device for virus treatment? The removal of viruses from the mouth and prevention of further infection is based on the importance of the “virus loading” effect and the time of infection. The device might be effective at the beginning of the infection, up to several days, while the virus is in the mouth and before it invades the rest of the body. It may be necessary that a prolonged use for several hours or several times per day may be necessary.
-
Is the device used only for treating COVID-19 viruses? No. The device has the capability, through adjustable functions, to treat a wide variety of current and future viruses.
-
Does the device treat viruses that enter through the nose? For complete protection, a similar device is available that fits inside the nostrils, with an opening for breathing. The majority of viruses are in the mouth where they build (virus loading) and start the infection, so it is anticipated that the mouth-only treatment could be sufficient. However, the parallel “in-nose” treatment is also available.
-
Is the device a consumer product or doctor-prescribed medical appliance? The device is expected to be classified as a consumer product because it is completely safe. In that case, it will be available off-the-shelf, but it can also be prescribed by a doctor and covered by insurance.
